Spray them with Lacquer Thinner has worked for me. I have not been able to tell about the potential to break apart. If they are old I just spray them till they are soaked, then let them dry real

I store mine the same way Greg does (baggies inside Tupperware containers) although a lot of mine I have left in their original sealed envelopes. Only have problems with 20+ year old MicroScale

I store my decals in Zip Lock Freezer bags and then it Tupperware boxes. I haven't experienced musch cracking and some of my sets are from the 70's...
