I'm going to take a swag on this but the CV ties are styrene I believe. The MEK thins the barge cement and softens the styrene making a bond. Someone could probably explain this better

I have 50 hand laid turnouts on my steam era freight car railroad. Many of those 50 are on CV switch tie blocks using the Barge cement activated by MEK method. I have had no problems in 10 years.

One article I read (and tried long ago) said to use a soldering iron and heat bond it in place. What I tried was code 40 rail on a little mining operation. Probably 30/40 years

I agree with Jim, especially when it comes to turnouts. I find that adjustments need to be made after the initial build of a turnout as different pieces of rolling stock pass through it (e.g., Sunset

sections of rail that was glued down letting go all over the layout. The owner lives
