At risk of being a contrarian: but any thoughts of using Evergreen Styrene strips? 0.060" is only 0.003" off from 5 inches. Tichy Trains has instructions for good weathering for plastic flat car

I agree with Dave Zuhn, the Excel K18 knife (not the K17) is one of my favorites. It has a soft grip side, blade release at the rear (safer as it keeps your fingers away from the blade when changing

Key point is that it will not roll off the work surface. Also that bright yellow part may make it easier to find on the work surface. I will look for these next time I go to an art supply store.

To narrow boards down by one inch, I would do this. Stack several boards on edge and
clamp them between two pieces that are as thick as the desired width. Then sand the boards down to the height of
