Re: 1920s standard freight car lengths for side tracks
Do we know what period/era 40 feet was considered a standard car length for measuring or describing side and yard tracks? That kind of implies 36-38-foot-long cars or a mix of longer box and gondola

other gondola to box car rebuilds
Neither gons nor boxcars, but similar idea: the CPR converted 260 flat cars to auto-boxcars of the 296000-296102 and 296103 -- 296259 series; - re-building in July 1916 - February 1918, with IH: 9'

Eric Hansmann asks,
Well, not a gon-to-box conversion but similar: in 1929, the B&M rebuilt 100 steel gondolas into their 29000 series pulp racks
with two side doors. I have a bit of a writeup on

Re: LNE Rolling Stock
OK, more confusion.
One of the guys here sent me a nice photo of one of the LNE composite boxcars. Photo was taken in early 1950's from the autos in the background. Has an interesting round roof.

Re: other gondola to box car rebuilds - was LNE Rolling Stock
Oops. I just re-read Bob Witt’s noteson the SAL automobile cars built from gondolas. Those seem to be a DepressionEra project. But the LNE, WM, and W&LE conversions were not.

Dennis captured the gist of it, but here are a few more details concerning the shell and dome volumes both being listed in the tariffs.
1. Starting in 1917, all new general purpose tank cars

Re: LNE Rolling Stock
I found this example about a year ago:
The drawing is for a SAL class A-1 automobile box cars SAL 9011-9035 (1936) and SAL 9036-9060 (1937). I am intrigued by the note that these box cars were built

Add one more: the W&LE converted 400 wood gondolas in their 43000-43999 and 44000-44999 series into all-wood, double sheathed boxcars in the 22000-22399 series between 1917 and 1918. There were still
