Richard, as I recall many of the steel reefers were rebuilt at Derby Shops by replacing their doors with a steel panel, removing the roofs and increasing the sides by a foot or so and adding cross

Also interesting how that car is marked, and a good example of why the MCB/ARA was trying to get the railroads to adopt standard reporting marks. The proper name of the railroad isn't "Big Four". It

I’m not certain when Southern 115232was built, but I suspect it was just before the 1911 amendments to the SafetyAppliance Act. The amendment stipulated the addition of safety

Well spotted, but the step isn't missing - there simply was never one fitted there ( note no rivet holes in the side sill). It's 1913 and this car hasn't been brought into compliance with the

As George mentioned, the Southern 116850-117349 flat cars hada 41-foot, 6-inch length. The image I sent was of an earlier car build and afoot and a half shorter.
