Use an InterMountain drop bottom gon, leave off the laser cut wood sides and bottom. Weather heavy with black chalks to represent soot. Would not be that hard to model.

The budget minded Mather Company dod in fact use bent metal rods to form their SILL STEPS. The only stirrups I know of in transportation are on horse saddles.
