Re: Throwback Tuesday: MDC 50 ft SS Automobile Boxcars
My not so secret weapon/tool for removing things is the Single Edge Razor Blade hled a very shallow angle. Because these are so wide, they do not gig into the surface.

Re: Flat Black
Does everyone realize that "Flat" black was not a color used by railroads... it is a color used by modelers... Linseed oil paints were naturally semigloss to glossy... but weathered to flat...

Re: RI 141000 - 142000 single sheathed XM
To be clear, the wheels noted by Ray are horizontal (vertical shaft.) There is no evidence that these cars ever got vertical wheel brake gear.

Re: last hurrah for the RPI layout?
This is second hand, and possibly not 100% accurate, but in outline, this is the story:
The layout was built in the basement of an RPI dorm. RPI has been renovating dorms for some time, and

Very fine work (as always) Bill - I'm especially impressed by your removal of all those cast on
grabs and ladders without destroying the car! I really struggle with that...

last hurrah for the RPI layout?
Just an FYI -
This Saturday is (very likely) the last op session for the NEB&W (RPI) layout
in Troy, New York. This is one of the best model railroads in the world. So sad.

Re: Throwback Tuesday: MDC 50 ft SS Automobile Boxcars
Regarding the use of MDC underframes to donate to MP steel 50' double door cars. this is really a simple swap. The underframe is narrower and shorter than the Proto car, so I used shims on the sides

Ron, you wrote
Can you tell me more about these kitbashes? I cut up a couple of the MDC cars to get the roofs and ends, so I have some extra underframes to work with. Were these bashes involved?

Re: T&P picture needed
Both shots of T&P 40061 and T&P 40450 clearly show the transverse air reservoir, which the cars were built with. In the mid-fifties most or all of the cars were rebuilt with steel-grid running boards
