VERY cool!
Growing up in Pittsburgh, you were besieged by the cacophony of noise, air pollutants, and smells you would never get away with now.

Would a large load like this have been included in a regular train, or would it have required it’s own engine and caboose?

Just a guess, but I’m slightly familiar with these machines … my dad worked for Ring Screw Works in Detroit. He took me there a few times to see where he worked. They had a bunch of cold-headers,

Re: Gondolas converted into TOFC cars
The CB&Q converted some composite 40’ gons to TOFC service and they were quite unsuccessful. The Burlington Route Historical Society has a “data sheet” (#12) that has a photo.

Tim,
Thank you for the R. I. Gondola TOFC Cars. I am guessing that the car you built was from a Tichey war emergency car. Looks very good.
Thanks for the pictures

Re: Photo: Heavy Duty Milwaukee Road Flat Car 601051
What route did this take to get to Vancouver? If it went MILW all the way then crossing the border at Sumas, Wa is the only option. Hard time seeing this being the case. Pulp digester makes more sense

:Does anyone have information on Gondolas that were converted into TOFC cars, or pictures, from the early 1950's.. I want to build some, but cannot find information, or pictures.

It looks like a coke drum.
In a delayed coker, which produces petroleum coke, the reaction occurs in the heater and on the way to the drum, where the coke settles out and the light hydrocarbon vapors
