Re: C&IM coal gondola service?
The run by of the freight with C&IM gondolas looks like the Santa Fe in Illinois - where I'd expect to see those cars.

Re: Hauling Sand before Coverd Hoppers Became Popular
The CNJ regularly hauled sand out of the Vineland, NJ and Millville, NJ areas in 52' gondolas. The sand was just piled in the car - CNJ employees would joke that SJ-2 looked like a rolling sandstorm.

Reasonably inexpensive TUNGSTEN "grit" is available online - I bought some on Amazon.
This is poured into center sills or under the floor and it's denser than lead, not

Schuyler,
There is a town about 20 miles from me that used to have two cement
plants - Superior Cement and Washington Portland Cement and the
town is called "Concrete". Actually it's a little more

Re: Hauling Sand before Covered Hoppers Became Popular
Clark,
I looked up my Q hopper roster to get the car classes, and I don’t find series 190000-191749 listed as such. I found 19000-19499 (HT-1) and 190500-190999 (HT-2). The next class I have is

I worked for Corning Incorporated (formerly Corning Glass Works) for a while. Corning has made a wide variety of products from telescope lenses to kitchen ware to optical fiber to catalytic converter

The IC car is a 55 ton open hopper. Built in 1949 by Pullman Standard. From the car diagram it looks like the Alternate Standard Offset Hopper that the IC had thousands of.

Re: [Non-DoD Source] Re: [RealSTMFC] Hauling Sand before Covered Hoppers Became Popular
All;
Reason I ask is, I am aware of several customers that wanted specific cars (classes) for their use, and got their way. And this is related to why they did not want sand in box cars or gons.
