Re: What methods do you use to add weight to an empty flatcar?
Weights and lead shot -- I started thinking (always dangerous). Smallest shot packs more densely. It follows that lead powder would be densest of all.
Turns out that lead powder is used to add

On some X29 models, I applied strips of 0.005-inch styrene. It's exaggerated but does show up.

David,
Look again, the journal lids are open, not missing. That's because this is a hump and journals were oiled as the car passed over the hump.
He is applying a route card to the route card tack

Given that a journal is clearly missing its lid, I’d say he’s tacking a Bad Order card to get that fixed.

Before anybody gets really annoyed at Bruce for number two. He meant archer panel line decals. Archer also makes weld line decals which are meant for armor guys and you definitely don’t want to use

Re: PRR X31A facts you want to know
Mel,
There are at least 4 approaches that I know of:
1) Clear (thick) decal film
2) archer weld line decals (Bill W's favorite way right now)
3) etched metal appliques (I've done this. It's not easy
