Re: OIL CAR
All Southern Pacific owned tank cars such as the 12,500 gal. O-50-13 class built in 1941, were classified as "O" type freight cars. The O stood for oil. In 1950 the SP had the 10th largest tank car

In about 1938-39 rebuilt about 100 of these into all-steel cars that looked very similar to a tall "X29". A few years earlier FGE ripped off the old superstructure and replaced w/a new one

The PRR had around 3,000 of these cars, and they became FGEX reefers in the early 20s

P&BR Gondola (Was Union Railroad Gondola)
Friends,
Elden's comment about steel-related railroads prompted me to dig out this photo of Patapsco & Back Rivers gondola 127. It was from series 100-199, a 52' 6" mill gondola. The photo was taken

Re: OIL CAR
Was it early enough to be “pre-tank-car” ?
Initially (IIUC) oil (crude/refined) was shipped in barrels. Obviously, leakage would contaminate the interior for other loadings (such as grain).

Most people simply don't understand the technology.
If you USE the internet for anything at all, there are hundreds of entities out there gathering information about you.

Tony, I agree but it's the only way to keep up with the grandkids. I hate the arrogance of the leadership of the company however,
