Oh, yeah. These tarped trailers were commonly carried as piggyback loads on flat cars in the day, so there is a legitimate tie-in to this group's subject.😉

Open top semitrailers were extremely common in the post WWII era. CMW offers one with many different logos in HO scale. I think maybe overhead cranes were more common then forklifts back then???

Attached is a slightly different photo of CRLX 5557. My file name indicates it is a Mather car. Note the clear stencil near the right side ladder indicating Return to E. Chicago, Ind.

Thanks for all the replies; given the particular use of the cars to the Eugene agent I’ll leave it off.

The photos that were attached are actually A-50-6's converted to hogfuel cars. They are the 50' variety. I know the A-50-4's were also so converted. This would make a fairly simple kitbash of a Funaro

Doug,
You may well have identified the use of the Eugene "return to" placard. The placard makes perfect sense for the photo (likely via Tim O'Connor), but will not do much good for Charlie

Could be but it’s angled and placards were rectangular. Before computer routing many ‘agent assigned’ cars were stenciled with specific empty return information.
