Hello group,
Beyond a brief mention within this 12 y.o. discussion of using the HO Walthers 50' single sheathed automobile boxcar kit to represent an IC prototype series, I have found little further

Hudson,
I would agree. I tend to think that the scrap on the ground is what is left of the pile that was being loaded into the car.

I think a load of tin can scrap would be hard to overload, lots of air space.

Fenton, I've built both. Run them for awhile then sold the Sunshine car. With the 6' door it didn't have the character of the Speedwitch model.

Looks like this car may have been an overload. The scrap on the ground is an attempt to adjust the weight. Scrap dealers were notoriously bad at judging weight in my field days.

First thing I thought of when I saw the photo was the clubhouse my cousins and I built on family land next to the Rock Island's Keokuk & Des Moines Division in Pella, Iowa. We called it Railroad Club

Re: PLE 46145 gon with scrap tin load 1942
Some of these cars apparently survived up to 1953. It looks like both the wood and steel side versions could be useful for most steam era modelers given their longevity and abundance.
