I'm working from memory, as well, but I recall that the metal portion of the cattle guard was typically a dirt or rusty color (rust + local dirt color) with the tops of the rails or bars

Haha! Those are paint! There was a question about these many years ago on the list (2008), which appears not to have been answered. They were likely some internal C&O code or marking for some reason.

I would not go by a picture of a model as either it IS on both sides or the model is wrong as the picture in the Pullman archives shows it just opposite with the A-end on the right and the
