FWIW - when applying paint that is to represent "roof cement" I apply it with
a brush and move the brush in ways that simulate the way that

I dunno, looks to me like regular boards nailed against the inside of the door opening. That was a pretty typical practice; I believe dedicated grain doors with paper seals were a bit later than this

Same concept but increments of 1/20 inch rather than 1/32. Not even useful for O or S scale, nor model aircraft at 1/72 or 1/144.

Interesting comment about painting all the layout wood black. I found it increasingly difficult to work on track wiring and turnout controls under the layout, and also found that spiders -

We tend to forget that box cars often spent more time standing still in yards and on sidings than they did rolling along in trains during their service life.

The roof was easy to pop off. I started brush paint with Vallejo black but decided to ask. Should the roof hatches etc all just be airbrushed black? And here’s the underside I just ‘just’

No, it was delivered coated with black car cement see the prior referenced article by Ed Hawkins in RPC 30.
