This 'cold galvanizing', as it's sometimes referred to, is 97% zinc powder in in organic binder. One common brand is Galvacon, trademark of Lanco Paints.

I agree with Bruce. Painted roof that has accumulated grime. To my eyes, it looks like matching paint under the running board.

I’ve never seen any reference to silver, grey, or a galvanized paint anytime during the 50s or before. Exceptions do occur, but the B&O seemed to cover things with car cement for water or

That is plenty close to the edge for me! Looks like there is still some paint left on the roofs. Did Santa fe put cinders or some sort aggregate in all thier roof paint for boxcars?
