In early days lumber was typically loaded/unloaded by hand, a stick at a time. Where cranes were available, cranes were used, with slings under the lumber.

Based on the repack dates, I think this film was probably taken in 1952 or early 1953.
There are some interesting tank cars at 2:36. They look like a kind of GA Type 30, but I've never seen this dome
