Re: lost styrene casting
I've found this site to be informative, since I have considered doing some castings for key pieces once I have time for modeling again.

Yes. The way to get multiple castings from one styrene master is to use the brass casting from the original master as the new master for the rubber molds. Of course, each step involves a little more

Ted,
Nice looking decals. Now to ask the obvious question, how long do you
suppose the aluminum monogram lasted? If the white was introduced in 42,

Brian,
In most cases the 50-ton AAR car is not a stand-in for the 70-ton AAR flat car. The 70-ton AAR flat car has not been produced as a plastic kit. Sunshine Models has produced some, however I

Re: AAR 70 ton flat car
As a specific example, the DT&I had both 50-ton and 70-ton flatcars. At
first glance they look the same but the 50-ton cars have 15 stake pockets vs
14 on the 70-ton cars. This is a very significant

Re: lost styrene casting - How it's done.
Hey Mr jackman died in 1974. I am larry.
See below for couple changes
If you use RTV rubber then no heat or pressure is used in making the mold.
You can not shoot plastic in to the rubber molds.

Thanks for the comments to date on this topic, its been illuminating.
A question: is there any way to go from one styrene master to multiple cast brass parts? Or do you need as many styrene masters

What are the visual differences between the AAR 70 ton introduced in
the early 1940's and the AAR 50 ton flat introduced at the same
time. Can the LL P2k 50 ton flat be used as a resonable stand-in

How it works:
You have to have masters. You can make a master out of brass and have a rubber
mold made from it. This rubber has to be very hard, and the master should,
