But the gondola wasn't a cut-down version of a Mather box or stock car... and they didn't attempt a rectangular wooden tank car-- otherwise P2K could make use of previous tooling!

Yes, there actually was a gondola built by Mather (C&IM 9250-9349, blt. 1943) and I would pay handsomely for a publishable photo of one. It's one of the few Emergency cars for which I am still

The car number for the NSS gon in the 1943 CBC is 1200. 40' 50-ton car. It
also has the tabs you mentioned at the bolster sides.

The "coupler box" is made for the original Mantua loop coupler. It was
suspended from the end sill rect. hole and the screw holding the loop
and hook. The slope in the underframe was to allow the hook

Garrett and all the Newburgh and South Shore cars is listed as built by
Magor Car Company. Was the NSS a USS road? Since the ORER entry says this
is a 40' car maybe my original premise is back in
