According to Epstein's HISTORY OF GATC, 1898-1948, the company purchased 1,721 stock cars from the Quaker City Tank Line in 1928.

One thing I would like to point out in this photo. The discoloration
to the hoppers at the doors. This was caused by heating the hoppers
with an open flame in an attempt to thaw the coal for unloading
