As late as 1986 we were using chalk marks on the Susquehanna (Susie-Q, NYS&W).We used to tie on and pull our train out slowly and chalk the destinations for later placement down the road. These

When working for the Santa Fe, learned chalk marks on cars were put
there by carmen not switchmen. They indicated who & when a car was
inspected. Also hobos had their monikers. Alot of the hoggers
