Same thing with RDG hoppers on the Monon. The many coal dealers along the line ordered a car of "hard coal" every so often and it usually showed up in an "eastern" hopper, most likely

Actually repairs like this were often done in the train, as the cars were inspected so that they could go onto their next destination without delay. RIP tracks were more often used for wheel change
