Re: Red Caboose box car roofs - corner grabs size disparity
It appears there was no real standard, only a minimum requirement. The
AAR Safety Appliance Standards presented in the 1940 CBC call for a
minimum handhold length of 16" along each edge of the corner

Being a former machinist, I would suggest you try cleaning the graduations (each groove) with a paint thinner or alcohol using a brush. Wipe clean thoroughly with a dry lint free (and oil free) cloth.

Jerry,
I can remember the times I painfully fought with a DA lift ring to fit into the corner hole on the running board. It would literally take minutes to line up each corner and that doesn't include

Dean, not all "lateral" grab irons were alike. Suck it up. It takes
about 20 seconds to bend your own to the exact size you need.
P.S. The DA grabs fit the DA etched running boards. :-)

Bob, I've seen that picture before. The number appears to be a chalk
marking, not a stencil. This car was built in 1946.

Guys;
There is another interesting shot of a bulk "dry" container being unloaded
you might find interesting; this one directly onto an industry floor, in the
nice Rich Burg article on containers
