Re: Sugar refining in New York City
The Amstar plant in Baltimore, Md. still ships sugar in covered
hoppers, just not as much as they used to. The tank cars are for
liquified sugar, which Amstar ships quite a bit of. A side line

I had emailed the NMRA several weeks ago encouraging them to reprint the

Might be worth a try...

Ed, the plant you're talking about was also an ASR facility and is
still going strong. This plant is several decades old, and until
about a year ago their utilities entered the plant over a bridge

Bill Welch kindly refers to the "restored FGE reefer at the [California State Railroad Museum]".
This fine 1924 ice wood reefer 35832 never actually needed "restoring" in the usual sense, and in fact

Al,
Well that's a start. I do not have that book. Let's try
another approach. If I wanted to buy a model of that
truck what would I be buying?

Shine, "NP Color Pictorial, vol 1", p 110, shows NP 51248, partly
behind a W-3 Mikado the photographer for some reason was interested
in. :-) The gondola's truck is nicely lit though the shot isn't

Re: What to do?
Clark,
If your search for a prototype for the stock car fails you can always take it off its trucks and place it in a barn yard and use it for a corn crib. Seriously, stock cars and wood

Re: Brake step dimensions
That looks to be just fine. Was doing some drawing
sorting. NP 35652 is for:
NP 4700-4999 = 50'6" 100M Box
NP 84000-84188 = Double Deck Stock
NP 14000-14499 = 40'0" 80M box
The width is 28 1/2",

Re: Sugar refining in New York City
Tim,
I'm pretty sure the Domino refinery in the NY Times article was not served by rail. I've seen Jack Frost 3 bay PS-2's in the BEDT (Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal) yard several blocks north.

Somewhat tangental to STMFC but I thought this might interest a few
folks -- that NYC was at one time a major refiner of sugar. This is a story
about the ASR (Domino) refinery in Brooklyn. I wonder if
