Central Vermont's 41000-series boxcars were regularly used to ship firetrucks. Dwight Smith has a great photo of one being loaded in Claremont, New Hampshire.

40' end door cars were used for many loads that would not fit in a
non-end-door car, whether 40' or 50', and for which a car 40' long was

sealing wood
I used to use Scalecoat which worked just fine. It has some kind of
particles in it besides the lacquer. I think it was recommended on
Q'Craft instruction sheets.
I've also seen shellac recommended

MDI is Merchants Despatch Incorporated which existed from 1923-1936.
Build lots prior to 1923 were referred to as MDT lots; those from
1923-1936 as MDI, and those after as DSI

I don't know what "MDI" is. The cars were built by MDT. Perhaps you
were thinking of DSI (Despatch Shops, Inc.) which was a subsidiary of
MDT or NYC (I don't know which) set up ca.1935 to operate

Just returned recently from the 2007 NASG convention in Baltimore. Not too many "scale" dealers/vendors there compared to the past but enough to deplete the resources.
