"Buildings" doesn't necessarily mean houses. They could have been surplus Quonset huts or other prefabricated industrial/commercial buildings.

Double doors seem to be common characteristic of furniture cars, and they were certainly a feature of the Santa Fe's Fe-class furniture and automobile cars.
