Wooden coaling towers were built of treated lumber, and except for associated machinery houses were probably never painted. The blackish appearance probably was a mixture of coal dust and coal smoke

You might try a black or Santa Fe Mineral Brown wash to stain the wood rather than painting it an opaque color. You can always come back with the paint applied in protected areas only for

Detail will show A-O-K on a black STMFC if it's weathered a little. I
like to use "grimy black" or "weathered black" as my base color (as
opposed to "engine black", which will obscure detail) and go

On the GR and GRA, the wooden side boards were attached to the side posts
with carriage bolts and nuts. The carriage bolt was inserted into the hole
from the inside, and a square nut used up
