For freight cars not being used there is a need for storage tracks. It is very likely that part of a yard would be used for storage but only for that owning railroad's freight cars. Sometimes cars

Storage yards full of HOME road cars.
- in some cases, older cars, ready for retirement/scrap
Modeled by including scrapping scenes, white-lined cars, trees growing

That probably depended upon the road and its economic circumstances. Some lines might have cleared out older, less useful cars by sale or scrapping to avoid having to pay taxes on equipment not

It would depend on the yard, Kurt. Classification yards would
probably be somewhat less busy, reflecting the downturn in traffic.
