Re: Packers Car Line
Tim and Rupert,
The caption of PCX 4000 states the cars were built in 1956 by PC&F, but
the build date of PCX 4000 can clearly be read as 6-57. According to
the 1956 list of orders in Railway Age

Surplus wheel sets
List,
A fellow listr asked for surplus wheel sets in plastic on metal axles to finish a gond load of wheels. I must humbly admit to loosing the requesters address "somewhere" in the paper pile

There is a builder photo of PCX #4000 in the Burlington
Historical Society "Bulletin" #12. If I recall this car
is stenciled built in 1956.

Most of the coal must have moved very short distances by

smaller scale than in

Re: Packers Car Line
Rupert,
Packers Car Line had 400 cars (4000-4300) built by PC&F. A photo of PCX
4142 (available from Bob's Photo) taken 12/12/57 has NEW 8-57 stencils.
In the 1/59 and 1/62 ORERs this was the only

They are not in the 7/61 ORER, so built - or at least owned by PCX - after then.

List,
One neat thing I have found for this idea is building turn of the century equipment.
These old cars seem to have lived on in old shop areas, roundhouse stalls, cinder

Eastern Canadian Coal
Speaking of U.S. products going into Canada in discussing the IC twin hopper decals raises a question for me. As I expect most of us are aware, Bristish Columbia produces a lot of coal. At present

Re: Rolling stock as scenery
Back in the late 50's and early 60's ( up to the early 70's) the Santa Fe would fill most of the sidings between Barstow and Needles, CA with ice reefers with the hatches and doors open to dry out

Packers Car Line
I understand that the Burlington was the camouflaged owner of the Packers Car Line, formed to provide Armour & Company with more modern reefers - PCX 4000-4399 built in 1956 by Pacific Car & Foundry.

This may not be as far fetched as it may seem.In Alburgh on the Rutland, foreign hoppers would be stored awaiting unloading in a rather large coal facility. The coal would then be transferred to

The problem with that is most layouts already have a track to scenery ratio that's way out of kilter. However, Tom raises a good point; storage tracks could really be part of the scenery, track along
