Re: roofs and ends [Was: Grand Truck Western Box Cars]
Yes, some cars were built for the NYC with diagonal panel roofs very
late in 1948, with deliveries continuing into 1949.
That's correct to the best of my knowledge. I was merely pointing
out that

I learned years ago, that all the local shops around here say "this or that
decal is out of stock" which translates to 'it is not worth my time to order
it for you since after shipping I make no money

Re: Raised panel roof replacements
Ken, you'll need 4/4 dreadnaught ends for the LNE cars.
Tom Madden, remembering when the Alpha cement plant yards was full of 'em.

Actually, 1948
AFAIK, the last box cars with prewar style Dreadnaught ends were
built for the Detroit & Mackinac in 1947.
Union Pacific R-50-24s in 1939

Staffan,
The earliest use of a diagonal panel roof I've found documented by
photo or other technical data is March 1948, which happens to be on 40'
box cars for your beloved Great Northern Railway

Re: Grand Truck Western (GTW) Box Cars
I think I got stuck on the '37 date thinking that to be a 10'0 inside height car. I guess the 10'6 inside height indicates it is a modified '37 built in the very late thirties or early forties. But
