Re: Gondolas with cement containers
I tend to think that the entry into my January 1942 ORER was based on an
announcement, maybe in Railway Age, that the D&H was ordering X number of
new cars since the gondolas weren't actually built

Branch line Train Books
Hi Folks
I found another box of Freight Conductors' Train Books in the Laramie Depot attic the other day. There are 27 of them and they are in addition to the 128 Train Books discovered in the attic

the largest in the world. This stuff definitely travels very far!

I'll bet most roads disposed of most of the cars since the lime in cement takes it toll on the steel.
On the DL&W the gons were retired. Some lasted in non-revenue service, but overall the cars were

one other thing to look at is that the cement could be a type not produced in the area it is being shipped too.

I'm not ready to buy this. Many commodities are quoted on a delivered basis, and where they are not markets would correct such price differences quickly.

Tim's right in saying that cement was shipped over much greater distances than some believe.
Data from Susquehanna deliveries in September 1954:
NYC 881907 bulk cement from E. Buffalo, NY to North

The cement plant in Laramie has always used local raw materials for its operation. It was built in 1927 as Monolith Portland Cement Company and had its own railroad, the Laramie Valley

I just looked at the routing. The cars were routed either RI or CGW from Mason City to Northfield MN where they were given to the MN&S for delivery to the MW on the west side of town.

Re: cement travel
Most of those 'Milwaukee' box cars went to lumber yards. The Milwaukee didn't have access the plants, nor did they have a direct route to the Twin Cities where most of the cement from Mason City went.

I believe it was because the war effort needed the roller wheel components
for tracked vehicles such as tanks and half tracks, as well as other
critical castings required for building war equipment.
