My "educated" guess is that "that thing" to the left of the truck is a box for holding defect cards.
The 1937 AAR car design allowed the use of many different makers' rooves, doors, and ends.

During perusal of Charlie's supplied site (Thank you!), I recalled that Atlas IS offering a Frisco rebuild (the tan and brown scheme) IF you join their club for $50--then you get one

Steve an I are in touch daily. It was at his (and John Golden's) requests that I did the set for the ACL car my Frisco artwork long since lost from my ALPS decals. I will be doing it anew.

Boxcars are BOGUS."
