GN had at least one boxcar with "grab iron extensions":
GN 29001 40', 20' opening
Also having grab iron extensions were:
SAL 20200-20209 40', 20' opening

I "found" NYC 1904.
It was an 0-6-0T Dummy. Built as NYC&HR 10 in September of 1914. Retired December 1932.

I cannot think of a more pleasant exercise than being atop a boxcar in frigid winter weather cranking a "movie machine". Wow. The fun!.

GN combo door XMs had 6 ft plug doors, therefore lacked extended grabs. However, CB&Q combo door cars in class XM-2 had extended grabs to accomodate 8 ft plug doors.

Several comments make it sound like this was an NP only phenomena. Actually, any of the 40' combo door cars that had a six foot main door with eight foot auxiliary doors had this problem. Soo

The large lettering with periods after the initials went both diagonal and straight line. The smaller lettering also made it onto some of the 50' cars too (SP&S 14241 50' DD boxcar in June 1967 Jim
