Garth, Those were converted in the 60s for Kaolin clay service. Most of these cars had vents on the ends right below the roof.
There were two series' of these particular cars 34000-34124 and

I used Tru Color TCP 214 GN freight car red over a primer coat of Tamaya Fine Surface Primer. The Tru Color paint holds much better with a primer on resin. I had problems with paint coming

Looks like the lever is to engage the wheel that rides on top of the railroad wheel and is connected to the generator that runs the circulating fans in the ice bunkers.
