Re: NP Mystery Car
The NP included sand in it's depot paint formulas to stop the "little darlings" from carving their initials into the wood. Graffiti isn't new, the form just changes.

Eric,
Thank you very much for your effort to compile and share this information; especially as my early years data is very scant.

Thanks, Tim! You guys are the best!
Drew, you are correct, and the X31A with roof hatches was for coal tar chips. I did the research!

That is fascinating, Don!
Would those tanks be steel do you think?
If so I think we have found the top sill message on the car: "GARRET WINE CO'S GLASS LINED STEEL TANK CAR" ? :)

Here is a finished Steam Shack GTW ss boxcar model that I built last year. It was a nice kit and built up similar to today’s resin kits.

Hi Jacob,
I've wondered about these cars from another perspective. You note that they had glass tanks but I
believe you mean to say glass lined tanks. These cars look like a 17-18 year newer

Re: NP Mystery Car
Well considering spray cans were not invented until the transition era, that is the reason for lack of graffiti on steam era freight cars, not because your generation was smarter or had more respect.

It seems that the late 1950's was a time of change for many railroads in their paint and lettering schemes.
