I believe they were used by a brakeman to ride a car being set out or just moved if it needed to be uncoupled from the “left” end of the car.

After rewiew of photos I took of GN 73994 I thought was finished I realized I had not changed the molded on hatch grabs irons to wire ones. Therefore, back to the hopper roof hatches to carve off
