Got it....sorry, Dennis, but sometimes I need a picture! So I guess the flange not only kept rain off the door edge, but also, when the door was closed it prevented water from seeping between the door

GN painted their freight car trucks "mineral red" up to and including the vermilion scheme. The glacier scheme got black trucks, as did Big Sky blue.
