These are definitely Bohn or similar ventilator hoods. Examples were seen on many early refrigerator cars. Here is a photo from Wesrterfield of one of their SFRD models with these

I bought a some decal sets from Tichy at Trainfest to replace those inF&C kits. I applied one set and found the film to be fine, but the ink (orwhatever) is very heavy. Too heavy to snuggle in or

Maybe my eyes are bad; however, when I expand the photo to look at them they appear to be bulky open reefer hatches. Note other reefers have open hatches as well.
