Re: Western Maryland hoppers
While it is unknown, I’m going with black on WM hoppers for my late 1926 focus. Here’s a Bowser model in factory paint that I updated.

Cool looking car; it’s nice to built ‘out of box’ and not get boggle down with a difficult kit.

That's a long-standing debate, and to my knowledge never settled. I heard it hashed out many times, by knowledgeable people, when I lived in Pittsburgh. Some WW II WM photos sure look like fresh black

I was curious about that myself at one time. The answer is no, it is just coal dust and weathering that makes them look black.

Were Western Maryland hoppers ever painted black?
There's a steam era photo in one of the all color books (Don Ball?) which shows a train full of these hoppers, some painted freight car red, some

Nice job, Bruce! That model has been an RPM classic for 20 years now. I think you added the right aftermarket details to make it stand out. I also think you nailed the “dusty” effect perfectly.

Bob,
Thanks for posting this picture of Klamath yard. I don't think anyone would consider the
caption "the main line up and down the West coast" as being particularly descriptive. I'm
sure that is

Speaking of WWII I'm just finishing up Nimitz at War, an excellent book if you haven't read it. Also the Pacific War Trilogy by Toll is also excellent.

at least until September 1949 if not later
my guess is that the steady rotation of cars due to the AB brake mandate
by 1953 would result in none of them getting past

Tony,
Thanks! One of the delights in modeling 1944 is that I get to have the "slogan" cars (or at least many of them!)

Re: C&EI War Bonds boxcar
Doubtful. There were directives to paint out war bonds slogans at the end of WW 2. Let me see if I can find the PRR notice I’ve seen before.
