tiny diameter tubing
There's a company in England -Albion Alloys - which sells tiny diameter tubing. The smallest size I have is .4mm (.016in) OD, .2mm (.008in) ID.
I use .8mm OD as coupling for .020 in. hand rails on

If there was one piece of metal stock to be found on any North American car repair or RIP track, it was standard 1 1/4" inside diameter brake pipe. Which is why it may have been used for tank car

Stainless steel tubing
Detail Associates 0.019” brass wire is D.A. #2506. Their stainlessequivalent is #3506. They also have SS wire in 0.010”, 0.012” and 0.015”diameters.

Ngineering.com sells several sizes on thin wall stainless tubing which I use in tank cars as couplings.
To cut it, I tape the tubing tightly to a piece of wood and use a cut off disk to cut it through
