Re: seasonal coal traffic
Cheap water transport seems to have really paid off for coal. Marquette, MI had a large lakefront coal dock (a park today) to supply coal to the iron mines and coal dealers. Fuel oil and gasoline

In Duluth, MN there was the municipal steam heating works for the city. It only converted to natural gas in the last decade I

Re: Champ Decals venders: Are there any?
Bill,
I have 7 sets of Champ HD-51 so I could sell you one or two sets. My son made a huge order just before Champ quit and we tried to order the "unusual" sets that you didn't see very often.

I think soda ash (sodium carbonate) was produced by Solvay in WestVirginia,
although I don't know if the N&W got any of that traffic. But sodaash can be
carried in covered hoppers -- unlike caustic

Re: seasonal coal traffic
Hi Jim,
I don't have the STMFC post handy but I'm pretty sure you're referring to Car Service Rule 411, which required Allegheny-area cars (my term) be returned home as soon as possible.

Re: seasonal coal traffic
Erie did something similar with their iron ore business out of Cleveland. Photos show strings of off road hoppers (all from the same road), which I would assume were leased during the slow coal

Jim,
Yes, mostly cement, though I don't know where any cement plants were on the N&W. That said, the N&W territory in Virginia and West Virginia is rich in karst limestone, and there
