I use General's pastel pencils, the earthtone set. To make chalk marks, I sharpen the white or gray pencil on sandpaper to a very sharp point and then apply lightly. Pretty good results, though the

I too dislike the appearance of a slotted or even phillips screw to fasten down coupler pockets and even trucks. I found that for aesthetics, especially on a model built for show

Why not?
We have a case of "railroad" chalk at work. It's may be a tad denser and the stick is larger but it's pretty much like "sidewalk" chalk you can get at the dollar store.
