I believe the coal was sprayed while it was in hoppers so only the top layer of coal would be covered.

I always wondered why Richard Hendrickson didn't like the magazine/Hundman.

You've got it right although I am guessing that you think the DESPATCH end (with very
squarish looking ribs) is an SRE dreadnaught end, which it isn't.

Sad news
Robert “Bobby” R. Pitts, Sr. passed away last week. He was well known for his totally scratchbuilt HO scale tanks cars. I provided photos to him of some “rail whales”, one of which he modeled.

Branchline boxcar ends
Folks,
Looking to decipher the various ends included in the Branchline undecorated kits. I found an undecorated 40' 6' door from the 1400 series, with 4 different sets of ends.
#1 looks like an R+3/4

Thank you all for the documents and photos.
And a small oops. Looks like I need a copy of the Freight Cars Journal monograph 20 for the Northampton and Bath. Or at least the plans for the 50 ton steel

I agree, great video…
I’d need a couple days preparation before I could do anything similar. Right now my work area is covered with three RI stockcars, instructions, photos, tools, paint and I

Re: Bachmann Drop-End Gons
It's subtly different from the Greenville gon. The ribs at the end of the 'bottom' of the fishbelly aren't at the point where the bottom of the side slopes upward, but slightly closer to the center.

Re: Bachmann Drop-End Gons
Without getting better photos and digging out my gondola research materials, I'd say it looks pretty close to the P2K 52ft gon.
That design was built by Greenville Steel Car for several years before
