Indeed, it was common. I thought this was so interesting I did a set of patterns for "Sunshine Models" so I and others could have one example of this, using the Southern's 40-foot DD

Here's a few more I can think of for L&N:
HWL = Howell Yard, Evansville, IN
LAF = Lafayette, IN, after the Monon merged into L&N.
L&N and LN - came into use right before the L&N and SCL

Mainline Modeler. Certainly a common car although the design evolved over
about 20 years.

basis of traffic volume, Columbus GA on the Central of Georgia is
perhaps more likely.

Columbus, GA on the Central of Georgia.So it is actually Columbus, MS, on
