I know this is before this groups normal era (1870-1895 instead) of 1910-1956, but I believe editors and authors of books from this group have the expertice or knowledge.

FWIW my guess is that whoever owned it, it was in milk/creamery
service...

Tim, the box is set up for a #78 Kadee. That is a narrow box with a Kadee #78 coupler stuck in it. If you want it more narrow, I suppose you can file the sides down some more.
