Re: Why so little discussion on coal car models?
While I probably missed this discussion I remember going to Fort Lewis (WA) for summer camp once/twice (70s). The entire fort used coal in the past (pre/post war). I remember unused coal areas

Re: Prototype for new resin kits
In the 1960s, after their captive service ended, some "Cookie Box"
cars went into general service without being repainted. However,
this list isn't about the 1960s.

A number of railroads hauled Anthracite, which in the US is mined predominantly from Eastern PA. I am not an expert, but you may want to check out the reading historical

Re: Ulrich gondolas [Was: Prototype for new resin kits]
Tony--
Looks Ian beat me to it for your Ulrich gons, but I'll add that these cars were either built with a vertical stiffener on all but the end panels on the sides, or had these stiffeners added

Captive service? I photographed one here in Phoenix on the SP back in the 1960's.
Another "captive" car I photographed in Phoenix was a D&RGW GS gon that was assigned to the Monarch rock

Re: Why so little discussion on coal car models?
The RDG, LV, D&LW, CNJ, CRP, LH&R, L&NE all served anthracite mines and are collectively referred to as the anthracite roads because nearly 100% of the coal they hauled was anthracite.

Also, remember the C&O, N&W and Virginian offloaded coal to river barges at Kenova/Ceredos. Also, I've pix of both C&O and N&W hops in local Cleveland coal yards. When broken up regionally C&O

Re: Ulrich gondolas [Was: Prototype for new resin kits]
CN had a large fleet of Enterprise GS gondolas in both 36' and 40' versions, and the Ulrich car is about the best currently available to model the 40' cars.
Black is an accurate colour for CN

Re: Why so little discussion on coal car models?
Did Reading serve unique anthracite sources or would other anthracite
roads also be supplying that same need and therefore turn up far from home?

Small tank cars
Like Jared and others I would like some small tank cars too. This is a good
segue to a question I have been meaning to ask. The Ethyl corporation had
some small capacity tanks for lead anti-knock

I was curious about that car too - pretty unusual - love to know what it was for.
Good spot on the MP roof - I had not considered possible snow, and some of the cars near the rear of the same
