The Santa Fe did indeed paint wood running boards the same Mineral Brown
used for the rest of the carbody except the roof. The black roofs were
phased out in the 1950s, but cars originally

On most of the ATSF boxcars that I have ever seen with the black anti skid paint on the roof the wood roof walks were brown.

I just built a Red Caboose AAR 1937 boxcar, with Santa Fe Chief
lettering with map. The wood running boards and corner grabs
are the boxcar body color, a mineral brown. The roof is black.

One explanation might have been that one end of the load was over one truck and extended toward the other end of the car. That was probably permissible since it would not place all of the weight
