It is my understanding that the "painting" of the ends of lumber was
in fact a waxy type of sealant applied to prevent the wood from drying
too fast, thus splitting and checking.

I'm going to say painted ends of lumber in the steam era is to denote hardwoods, but I am not absolutely sure.
