A superb exposition Dennis. Thank you very much. I assume then,

foot boxcars whose siding is Unknown to be double

things. Yep, I've bought a number of RTR equipment, and some of it HAS ended up on the track

Hi Dennis
Wouldn't the same thing be true of SS cars originally built with wood

If so, then why don't we have any "long" 40

Hi A.T.
I don't know whether all or any were old furniture cars. Here is the
complete list of cars with IL greater than or equal to 40' 10" and
less than 49' 9". Maybe someone with access

My understanding of your hypothesis is that the cars were built with a
standard 40' 6" IL and DS wood ends. When rebuilt with thinner steel
ends they gained an extra foot or so of IL. This implies

I am not trying to be derogatory; I am saying that I don't see the RTR
collector and the craftsman as being in the same hobby. There is a common
thread of trains but that is all.
I guess I get irked

Re: "Long" 40 foot boxcars
Larry,
I can give it a good guess. Very likely these are cars that were built
with DS wood ends, then rebuilt with pressed steel ends. The original
end framing, which relied on the depth (thickness?)
