grabirons would be used in mirror pairs...the grabiron on the end of the car
would be a mirror of the grabiron on the side

Tom, These grabirons appear similar to a style used in the 1890's.
The 90 degree upward bend was a safety feature to prevent a brakeman's
foot from slipping off the end of the grabiron as he swung

Fontographer is currently available. I have Fontographer 4.1 which I purchased about a year ago.
You can import an image into Fontrographer and trace over it. It creates fonts which can be "typed"
